A firm favourite in Solmedia’s charity calendar, the team were raring and ready to get back on the water for this year’s Coracle World Championships in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. In a bid to increase their chances of a podium place, and with plenty of practice from previous years, Solmedia confidently entered two teams. But with a last-minute substitution for the Snappers (many thanks, Ayrton, for stepping in!), how would they fare on the water?
Pengwern Boat Club buzzed as crowds gathered along the River Severn to watch the annual spectacle. Donning their iconic lab coats, caps and sunglasses, team Swans were the first Solmedia representatives to take to the water. While the weather was sunny, the accompanying wind didn’t play in their favour and they found themselves heading downstream, away from the finish line! Quick handovers and a change in paddle technique didn’t save the Swans, who were eventually towed back to shore and knocked out in the first heat.
It was now all down to the Snappers, and with a little more experience under their belt, they had all to play for. Teamwork and determination saw them sail through the first heats, landing them a place in the final. Cheers from their team in those final laps and a few heroic dives into the river secured them an impressive second-place finish. A few pairs of soggy socks and shoes didn’t deter either team from enjoying the celebrations of the day – well done, Team Solmedia.
